I love to see what other teachers are planning. I thought I would share some of the activities we were doing this week to practice vowel teams ee and ea. If you have not figured out by now, I strongly believe in making reading practice fun. The students I work with need a TON of repetitions to master a skill. I have found MANY ways to successfully give them these repetitions, while also have fun! This keeps them engaged and is highly effective. This week we are working on ee and ea. It is so hard for them to remember when to use which. Even with some of the tricks: EE is the most common in the middle of words EA often comes before a d or t They really just need a lot of practice reading and writing these words. The favorite this week is the basketball game where they read a word on a paper ball, crumple it, write the word, then shoot it in a basket. Four in row and tic tac toe are always fun as well. I am constantly amazed at the amount of reading we get done using a sentence game compared to a book as well. Also picture it the book A HIKE IN THE TREES which is from an old program we had call The Wright Skills. These are still some of the students' favorite books every year they are so bright and colorful! The two printable books are AMAZING. They have decodable text, a place to write words with the skill and then how to draw pages that my students just cannot get enough of. You can see them at Down in Kinderville HERE. I warm up with a bit of review of the skill but then get this group right into practice. They need to be reading and practice the skills as much as possible. Sometimes I think we spend too much time teaching. They are ready to tackle some multisyllabic words with this skill. I've been working on making some fun activities for multisyllabic words as well. Anything to keep them on task and reading! Hope you are having a fantastic week. As always just hit reply if you ever have any questions I could help you with! Happy Wednesday! Amy
P.S. Did you know you can type the phonics skill you are working on in my store search bar to find all the activities in one place? |
Hi! Do you teach reading? Let me help you gamify your Science of Reading lessons!
Here is what I'm using for my Kindergarten intervention lessons this week! The focus is on segmenting and blending, letter naming and sound fluency. We warm up with this Chipper Chat -this is an oldie but goodie. It is a great way to practice phonemic awareness. Students respond to the task (segmenting or blending) and then get to put a magnetic chip, or I have used colored puff balls before as well. It covers all of the phonemic awareness skills, and I have been using it for years. See...
Getting kids to want to read can sometimes feel harder than actually teaching them how to read. We can have the best phonics lessons, engaging small groups, and structured routines… but if the motivation isn’t there, it’s an uphill climb. That’s where reading incentives come in. They give students a reason to practice. They build momentum. They create excitement. And for many of our struggling or reluctant readers, that little spark of motivation is exactly what gets them over the hump. More...
